Slow Growing Pre-Weaning Piglets Have Altered Adipokine Gene Expression
نویسندگان
چکیده
Growth rate affects adipose tissue development and variations in growth rate may potentially impact adipokine expression. Samples of subcutaneous (SQ) and perirenal (PR) adipose tissues and longissimus muscle were collected at day 21 of age from the fastest and slowest growing piglets within seven litters. Reverse transcription and real-time PCR were used to quantify adipokine mRNA abundance. Leptin, adiponectin, tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα ) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) mRNA abundance were lower in SQ from slow growing piglets (SGP) than in fast growing piglets (FGP, P < 0.05). Macrophage migration inhibitory factor and TNFα gene expression were reduced in PR from SGP in comparison to FGP (P < 0.05). Interleukin 1β (IL1β), IL15 and LPL were increased in the longissimus of SGP relative to FGP (P < 0.05). Analysis of mRNA abundance for these adipokines within adipose tissue at day 21 of age demonstrated that the effect of growth rate on adipokine expression varies among different adipokines and the internal and external sites of adipose tissue deposition (PR versus SQ). The increase in longissimus expression of LPL and IL15 suggests that nutrient partitioning for energy use may be greater in the skeletal muscle of the SGP.

Adipokine gene transcription level in adipose tissue of runt piglets.
Runt piglets were used as a model for neonatal stress to test the hypothesis that stress during the pre-weaning period can alter adipokine gene transcription levels. Runts were selected by birth mass <1kg and compared to littermates (controls) of mean litter weight. Subcutaneous (SQ) and perirenal (PR) adipose tissues were collected at d1 (n=5), d7 (n=7) or d21 (n=9) of age. Real time PCR was u...

Although growth rate is one of the main economic traits of concern in pig production, there is limited knowledge on its epigenetic regulation, such as DNA methylation. In this study, we conducted methyl-CpG binding domain protein-enriched genome sequencing (MBD-seq) to compare genome-wide DNA methylation profile of small intestine and liver tissue between fast- and slow-growing weaning piglets....
متن کاملEffects of weaning and weaning weight on neuroendocrine regulators of feed intake in pigs.
A depression in feed intake and growth often occurs in the weaned pig. Spray-dried plasma is often added to nursery diets in an attempt to stimulate feed intake during this lag. The current study evaluated gene expression of appetite regulators in hypothalamus and adipose tissue 4 d after weaning. Barrows (2 wk of age) were cross-fostered to a sow (SOW, n = 8) or weaned and fed a nursery diet c...

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of l-carnitine and/or maize distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) in diets of gestating and lactating sows on the intestinal barrier functions of their offspring. The experiment was designed as a 2×2 factorial with two dietary treatments (soyabean meal v. DDGS) and two l-carnitine levels (0 v. 100 mg/kg in gestating diets and 0 v...

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of flavor supplementation on preand post-weaning performance and behavior of piglets and sows. A total of 30 sows (Landrace×Yorkshire) and their litters were employed in this study. Sows were randomly assigned to 3 dietary treatments (10 replications per treatment). Dietary treatments included: i) CON, basal diet; ii) TRT1, CON+0.1% vanilla suppl...
